I would like to invite you to come and see Finders Keepers Losers Weepers, a site specific exhibition at Conway Hall, London. This building has an amazing history, renowned as a hub for free speech and independent thought. It started with a dissident congregation in 1787 who were in rebellion against the doctrine of eternal hell. It is now owned and operated by the Conway Hall Ethical Society.
All the artists in this exhibition took the time to explore this building and make work specifically for this historic space, keeping to the exhibition theme – the archaeology of mind and memory. My drawing “With each smell of the rose” is about how smell can unexpectedly bring back a flood of memories and it is installed into a skylight near the entrance. I drew this work straight on to a polycarbonate sheet. I wanted some elements of the drawing to be more solid, real and others to be less tangible, distant and faded.
This residency has received Arts Council England funding and includes the art-trail over 3 floors, a number of educational workshops and academic guest speakers at the Symposium which is chaired by Professor Rebecca Fortnum Middlesex University. The other Speakers include Margaret Carlyle Cambridge University, Professor Tina Chanter Kingston University. Jessica Voorsanger UCA University of the Creative Arts. They will expand and explore abstract notions around being, knowing, identity, time and space, giving a major contribution on the contemporary discourse of these enduring questions. The evening will also include poetry and performances by SLWA artists Joan Byrne, Liz Atkin and Léonie Cronin followed by a drinks reception.
