Exhibition – What Is Urban?

urban paintingI have two new oil paintings in the group exhibition What Is Urban? The exhibition opens in London next Thursday night (26/02/2015) at Brixton East, London. The painting on the left is called “In the Grip”, the one on the right is titled “Pinioned”. In these two paintings I explore the constraints of urban development on an individuals nature and spirit. How it binds and envelops us and the creatures we share this world with. These paintings are meant as a reminder that this urban world around us is of our own making. Both paintings will be available through the gallery. In my paintings and drawings I like to consider why we create cities, buildings, roads and vehicles? Why do we surround ourselves with these modern materials? Why do we choose to live in these spaces? We embed ourselves inside of our creations, live in them, yet endlessly yearn to be reconnected with nature, so how do we go about that? Other artists in this exhibition have made work about – skyglow at night, light and life and music spilling out from bars into streets, crowds, traffic congestion, views from bus windows, anonymity, concrete, weeds in cracks of buildings and pavements and an overworked and overused landscape that bears the scars of centuries of human passage. The exhibition is curated by Kate Bowe, Liz Charsley-Jory, Reema Dreaming and Pat Keay. I hope to see you there.
